This centennial history tells the story of Babich Wines from Josip’s first production of wine at Kaikino in the far north of New Zealand in 1916 to today’s substantial company with its headquarters in Henderson (West Auckland) and significant vineyards in Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough. It recounts the family’s origins in Dalmatia and concentrates on Josip Babich, father and grandfather of today’s owners of the vineyard and the enterprise that they established. The book is also the story of New Zealanders’ early preferences for fortified wine, followed in the 1960s and 1970s by a growing interest in table wines. Josip’s sons Peter and Joe and Peter’s son David have turned the company into a major local supplier of quality table wines and a substantial exporter around the globe. Michael and Judith Bassett wrote the story from the company’s records and from interviews with major players in the wider industry.
